While this happened when updating from Windows XP service pack 1 to service pack 2, using this procedure, you can get your old programs to run on any new operating system!
Here is the fix: - changing "compatibility mode"
1) right click on Start
2) click on Explorer
3) navigate to Sherlock.exe (for instance)
- if you don't remember where its located, then its faster just to click on SEARCH and type sherlock.exe
4) now, right click on sherlock.exe
5) click on Properties
6) click on compatibility mode
7) and put a check mark to chose "windows 95"
8) click ok/apply and exit out of everything.
